Sonny Waitr
Drummer
Sonny began playing professionally in the early 1980s. He performed with several cover bands, including “Fugitive Poetry,” which released two albums. Sonny contributed to their debut album, “The Colours of the Poet,” in 1985 and made appearances on television and radio. While in college, he toured Europe twice with the Henry Ford Community College band from Dearborn, MI, called “Model T.” He also performed on WJR radio with the “Model T” band.
When it comes to influential drummers, my favorite is myself—because I am always focused on improving my own performance. Another major influence is my drum teacher, Joe Syayn, with whom I studied for over 13 years. Other inspirations include Pistol Allen from Motown, Benny Benjamin of the Motown Records studio band The Funk Brothers, and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones.
